This series of mixed media collages is an homage to the late forgotten American photographer Patricia Schwarz (1951-2017), and a small part of my work in reviving and protecting her legacy. Patricia was the first photographer to focus on taking respectful and sensual art photographs of fat women, beginning in the early 1980s. What is now a common theme in photography did not exist when Patricia began her "Women of Substance" series. She contributed to changing the way society views fat women and the way fat women experience their own bodies. I combined Patricia's groundbreaking photos with my own images, as well as with found and curated scraps and maps and sheet music and moons and tape measures. My intention is to evoke the feelings of deep compassion, purpose and joy that Patricia's photos bring up for me.
